Condoms, the pill and more: contraception explained simply

MedWatcher Quick Facts

  • A wide range of options: From barrier methods to hormone supplements, the world of contraception is wide-ranging
  • Effectiveness: Correct use is the key to the best possible contraceptive effectiveness
  • Individual choice: the right contraceptive method depends on personal preferences and health conditions

Insight into barrier methods

Barrier methods such as condoms offer a simple and effective way to prevent pregnancy. They are the only ones that also protect against sexually transmitted infections (STIs). They are easily accessible and do not require a doctor's prescription. Condoms are available in different sizes, materials and even flavors to ensure a pleasurable experience.

Hormonal contraceptive methods

With hormonal contraception, such as the classic contraceptive pill, but also hormone patches or vaginal rings, chemical hormones that are similar to the body's own sex hormones prevent monthly ovulation. They are very reliable when used correctly and can also help to regulate the menstrual cycle. They must be prescribed by a doctor. The doctor should not only point out possible side effects, but above all check whether a hormone-based contraceptive method is suitable in the individual case or whether there are risk factors that speak against it (contraindications).

Long-term contraception and sterilization

For those who want longer-term or permanent contraception, methods such as the IUD (intrauterine device) or sterilization can be considered. While the use of an IUD offers protection for a longer period of time and is reversible, sterilization offers a permanent solution for those who are sure they do not want to have children in the future.

Natural contraceptive methods

Natural contraceptive methods, such as the temperature method or the symptothermal method, require close monitoring of the female cycle. They are free of side effects, but require careful monitoring and commitment to be effective. They can be an option for those who want to avoid hormones or other invasive contraceptive methods.

The world of contraception can be overwhelming at first, but with the right knowledge you can make an informed decision that suits your lifestyle and future plans.
