The thyroid gland is a butterfly-shaped organ located in the neck area below the larynx. It plays a crucial role in our body as it produces hormones that influence metabolism, growth and the regulation of various bodily functions.

There are different types of thyroid disease, including hypothyroidism (underactive), hyperthyroidism (overactive), thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer. Each of these diseases has different causes, symptoms and treatment approaches.

Frequency in Germany

Thyroid diseases are relatively common. Around one in three adults in Germany will develop at least one pathological thyroid change in the course of their lives. Millions of people worldwide are affected by various forms of thyroid disease. Hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid) is more common than hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid). In Germany, around 1 in 100 people have hyperthyroidism and up to 10 in 100 people have hypothyroidism.

The causes of thyroid disorders can be varied. Hypothyroidism can be triggered by autoimmune diseases such as Hashimoto's thyroiditis, iodine deficiency or medication. Hyperthyroidism can be caused by the autoimmune disease Graves' disease or hyperthyroidism.
