What is heartburn?

Heartburn is a common symptom caused by acidic stomach contents backing up into the esophagus. This can cause a burning or painful sensation in the upper abdomen or behind the breastbone.

Causes of heartburn

The most common cause of heartburn is the reflux of stomach acid into the esophagus, which is known as gastroesophageal reflux (GERD). Other factors, such as an unhealthy diet, obesity, smoking and alcohol consumption, can also contribute.
