MedWatcher Quick Facts

The most important facts at a glance

Types of fatty liver

There are two main types of fatty liver: non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and alcoholic fatty liver disease (AFLD). NAFLD occurs when fat accumulates in the liver without excessive alcohol consumption being involved, while AFLD is due to alcohol consumption.

Distribution in Germany

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is widespread in Germany and affects around a third of adults in the country. It is closely linked to factors such as obesity, diabetes and metabolic syndrome.

Causes of fatty liver

The main cause of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is an unhealthy lifestyle, which includes a high-fat diet, lack of exercise and obesity. Alcohol abuse is the main cause of alcoholic fatty liver disease.

Symptoms

In the early stages, fatty liver usually causes no noticeable symptoms. As the disease progresses, symptoms such as fatigue, upper abdominal discomfort and jaundice may occur. Timely diagnosis and lifestyle changes are crucial to treat fatty liver and prevent further complications.
